Shadi Bhagya scheme is nothing new, neighbouring states too have such schemes

Bangalore: In the current fiscal year budget, Government of Karnataka has initiated a novel scheme to provide financial aid of Rs. 50,000 to the Muslim bride belonging to families with annual income less than Rs. 1,50,000. Announcement of the scheme has given room for heated discussions in the media. It has been termed as an act of appeasement to a particular community.

However, it is worth reminding here that this is not a new concept brought about by the State, earlier schemes such as “Thali Bhagya” and “Adarsh Vivaha”( social security scheme) are being implemented in the State. There are such schemes which are being implemented in the neighboring States too.

The Schemes devised and implemented in Tamil Nadu and Kerala to rehabilitate the destitute, improve the social security and educational status of the poor girls, widows, orphans, to remove untouchability and also to encourage inter cast marriages.  For a holistic, sustainable and cohesive society creation of chaste families are absolutely necessary. The State as a welfare agency needs to devise such schemes to cement the relationship in the different groups of Society. Due to poverty, large numbers of girls in a Muslim society have remained unmarried; as a result the present Muslim society has to encounter and deal with unethical problems.

Islam considers marriage as one of the most virtuous and approved institutions. The importance of institution of marriage receives its greatest emphasis from the following Hadith of the Holy Prophet.

“Marriage is my Sunna, who so ever keeps away from is not from me”

Marriage is compulsory (Wajib) for a man who has the means to easily pay Mehar (dower) and to support a wife and children.

According to Maliki School of thought, under certain condition it is obligatory (fard) for a Muslim to marry even if he is not in a position to earn his living.

Hanafi School of thought considers marriage as obligatory (fard), for a man and it is forbidden (haram) to a man if he does not possess the means to maintain his wife and children or if he suffers from an illness, serious enough to affect his wife and progeny.

In this background, it is absolutely essential that the welfare State should strive to come to the assistance of the poorer section of the society. Besides, active involvement of community in this venture would definitely bring the desired results.
